The bun is an anomaly of a hairstyle. It can be worn high on the crown of the head or low at the nape of the neck, braided or twisted, sleek and tight or voluminous and messy. And all of these versions of the classic updo (and more) showed up on the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards red carpet. 

There was still a fair share of Old Hollywood waves and bobs, but the bun wins the award for most popular red carpet hairstyle of the night. From Lupita Nyong’o’s big braided bun she accessorized with a gold wire headband, to Mandy Moore’s Princess Leia double low buns, celeb’s hairstylists got inventive when twisting and pulling their hair up.
